Natura Naturans / Natura Naturata reconsiders the idea of nature and art as creative forces working together in contemporary art. The two phrases in Latin mean an active, creating nature; and a created nature, that is, art. Chinese scholars and artists during the Tang dynasty looked to unusual rock formations for expressive power. African artists included cowrie shells in masks, paintings, and sculptures to invoke and celebrate fertility and status. Chinese and European Renaissance artists selected marbles with intricate veins and striations to represent mountains, clouds, roaring seas. This exhibition presents the continuing collaboration between artist and nature in contemporary works that share stories of origins, mythologies, and our current cultural moments.
